Starts with a bang -- Tim is concerned that the soil is too loose and may have been filled at some point. Miraculously, he's able to get a soils engineer out that morning, who confirms it's undisturbed soil, but says to dig down 3 inches deeper for the footings. So Craig and Tim spend the morning digging it out by hand. (I'm dying to put on my boots and gloves and join them, but dutifully stick to my day job and stay out of their way.)

Tim and Craig have been here every day this week, straightening foundation stakes, putting the forming lumber, foundation rebar and various other hardware that I don't know about in place. The plumbers have been out, and have put pipes from the future utility sink and bathroom out to the street. The first inspection took place, and passed with no problem. Once again, the City of Sunnyvale gets the nod for efficiency, as the building inspector was able to come out in one day.

To top off the week, we had a groundbreaking party on Sunday! Though we can barely hope to someday come close to the party standards set by Shoun/Bong residence (let alone the ultimate ideal of the Goldings), we had a nice turnout and a lot of fun. There were children, motorcycles and poodles everywhere. Parties are a great way to expedite home improvement projects, so preparation for the party has crept our house a few more steps toward livability. The only thing we forgot was a ceremonial digging!
